Statement on the Introduction of the EACH Woman Act
Advocates for Youth applauds the reintroduction of the EACH Woman Act, legislation which lifts bans on abortion coverage, by Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA), Diana DeGette (D-CO), and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) in the House and Senator Duckworth (D-IL) in the Senate. We are proud to support this groundbreaking legislation to ensure that every person, whatever their income, can get affordable abortion care when they need it. We know that bans on abortion coverage disproportionately affect young people, low income women, and women of color. Even if they can overcome barriers like transportation or housing, many young people simply may not be able to afford abortion care if insurance coverage is not available.
“The EACH Woman Act gives us a path forward in expanding access to abortion care,” said Debra Hauser, President of Advocates for Youth. “Young people need access to and coverage for all their reproductive health needs, including abortion. Congress should be fighting for young people’s futures and standing strong for everyone’s right to determine the size and timing of our families. It is unconscionable that too many policy makers remain silent in the face of increasingly brazen and heartless attacks on reproductive health care.
Representatives Lee, DeGette, and Schakowsky have reintroduced the EACH Woman Act in the House of Representatives, alongside 105 other members of congress. Senator Tammy Duckworth led the Senate introduction, for the first time, joined by 9 other Senators.
