Mourning the Losses Caused by the Texas Abortion Ban
This week brought the tragic news that the Texas abortion ban led to the deaths of at least two women in 2021. Josseli Barnica was forced to wait for miscarriage care, which was delayed to ensure compliance with the Texas abortion ban, and died of the ensuing infection. A Pro-Publica report found that at least one other woman died in 2021 as a result of the Texas abortion ban – and unknown numbers of others in the years since.
Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Josseli Barnica and all who have lost their lives. They should be alive today. They and everyone who needs abortion care should be able to access abortion in safety and comfort. But nearly half of states have bans on abortion in place, endangering the lives of anyone in need of pregnancy care and/or abortion care.
Young people are working to make sure everyone who needs access to abortion can get it, and for the safety of mothers in the U.S. and Texas. They are working in the face of ceaseless attacks on people who need abortion – bans that block procedures, prevent medical care, and allow and encourage surveillance and harassment. Advocates for Youth condemns Texas’ abortion ban and all abortion bans. Young people deserve a future where they can live the life they want to live. Laws should never put our lives at risk.
