Advocates for Youth Opposes Puberty Blocker Bills

Advocates for Youth is strongly opposed to South Dakota’s “puberty blocker bill” and similar proposed laws around the nation which ban transgender children and young people from access to hormones which delay puberty, a tool to help affirm gender identity.

Transgender young people face a heightened risk of depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide. Fortunately, when transgender young people are allowed to use their preferred name and their gender is socially affirmed, their risk of suicidal behavior is cut in half. Conversely, experiencing a rejection of transgender identity creates an increased risk of suicide.

“South Dakota has made itself a dangerous place for transgender children and young people today,” said Debra Hauser, Advocates for Youth. “This bill and others like it are not based in concern for child welfare, but rather in fearmongering and transphobia.”

“Transgender young people have the right to safety and affirmation, and to be celebrated for who they are. Legislators should be working to ensure these young people are safe in schools and communities, not spreading misinformation.”
