Advocates Condemns House Actions Against Transgender People

On November 20, Transgender Day of Remembrance, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that transgender people would not be permitted to use bathrooms that match their identity in the Capitol and House office buildings.

Debra Hauser, President of Advocates for Youth, shared this statement:

“Everyone has the right to be who they are and to express their gender in ways that work for them. Yet politicians continue to villainize transgender people simply for being who they are, and to make private spaces unsafe. Millions of people visit the Capitol every year, including young people exercising their right to meet with their elected representatives. They along with incoming Representative Sarah McBride, and the many transgender staffers who work for elected Representatives and Senators, should not be subjected to discrimination in the halls of Congress. We call on Speaker Mike Johnson to rescind this rule. Congress should be working to improve the lives of all Americans, not spending even more time attacking transgender people.”
