Statement on Changes to Rule 1557

Today, the Trump administration published their proposed changes to the Health Care Rights Law also known as Section 1557.  The proposed changes would upend protections for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals, including young people, from discrimination in healthcare or health coverage.

This latest action follows this administration’s trend of weakening protections against discrimination and rolling back the rights of the LGBTQ community. We have seen this time and time again –  whether it be eliminating Title IX protections for transgender students, banning transgender servicemembers from the military or, most recently, giving medical providers the right to refuse patients care.

LGBTQ young people already experience difficulty in finding medical care that is free from judgement, abuse, and misconception. Young people deserve to get the medical treatment they need, when they need it, and they will not sit idly by as their basic right to healthcare is dismantled. They should not be hindered by the bigotry of this administration and will fight against this dangerous proposed rule.
