The Texas Abortion Ban Has Cost A Young Person Her Life
Pro-Publica research has found that yet another woman has died as a result of the Texas abortion ban: 18-year-old Nevaeh Crain. Nevaeh died of sepsis after three emergency room visits, where doctors delayed treatment and called for unnecessary medical tests in order to ensure compliance with the Texas law.
Said Advocates for Youth President Debra Hauser:
“We are devastated to learn of the death of Nevaeh Crain. No young person should face suffering and death from pregnancy complications. But political extremists have forced this danger on young people. We know that legislators passed this law with no concern for the safety of pregnant people. Since then, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has worsened the harm and danger by threatening to prosecute doctors who he feels were too quick to offer life-saving abortion care. The state of Texas even sued the federal government to force emergency rooms to ignore federal guidelines intended to save pregnant patients whose lives are at risk – with a series of Trump-appointed judges upholding the suit.
Young people’s lives are at risk from abortion bans and the anti-abortion crusaders who are committed to intimidating doctors and denying care to patients. Nevaeh Crain should be alive today. We need to fight alongside young people to ensure no one else dies because of these bans.”
