Youth of Color
In the United States, rates of HIV, sexually transmitted infection (STI),
and unintended pregnancy are disproportionately high among youth
of color, particularly young African American and Latina women, when
compared to other youth. One-third of teens are adolescents of color
and their proportion of the total teen population is expected to
increase; program planners must recognize the disproportionate rates
of health issues among these youth and plan culturally appropriate
interventions to meet their needs. Despite demographic shifts and
current health indicators, few HIV/STD and teen pregnancy prevention
programs meet the needs of youth of color, especially young women.
