Sad News
Cynthia Dailbard, Women's Reproductive Rights Advocate, Dies
Advocates for Youth is sad to announce that our colleague and dear friend, Cynthia Dailard, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2006, after suffering a cardiac arrest. Cynthia, 38, was a senior public policy associate at the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit research and advocacy group on women's sexual and reproductive health issues.
Cynthia's research and many articles on comprehensive sex education, family planning, and adolescent sexual behavior were widely used by AFY and other organizations to support our policy and program work. Those of us who worked closely with her mourn her loss both as a professional and as a friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a memorial fund established in Cynthia's name at the Chevy Chase Bethesda Children's Center, where both her daughters attend preschool. The Cynthia Dailard Fund for the Enrichment of CCBC Children will be used for scholarships and enrichment programs for the school. If you would like to make a donation, checks can be made out to CCBC Children's Center (please note that your contribution is for the Cynthia Dailard Fund) and mailed to:

In addition, a friend of Cynthia's has set up a website in her honor (http://inmemoryofcynthiadailard.wordpress.com/) to provide a comment section to give people a chance to share their thoughts and stories with Cynthia's family and friends.

There is now a vaccine for HPV for girls ages 9-26! In June, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil® for the prevention of HPV. This vaccine can help prevent against diseases caused by HPV Types 16 and 18, which cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types 6 and 11, which cause 90% of genital warts cases. The vaccine is given by 3 injections over 6 months.

New Research: Nine out of ten Americans have sex before they are married
A new study published in the journal Public Health Reports shows that the vast majority of Americans have sex outside of marriage. Analysis of data from the National Survey of Family Growth shows that even among Americans born in the 1940's and those who remained abstinent in their teens, premarital sex is the norm.
These findings further call into question the federal government's massive financial commitment to abstinence-only-until-marriage programs for 12-29 year olds. The study's author, Dr. Lawrence Finer, recommends instead, "providing young people with the skills they need to protect themselves from unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases once they become sexually active."
