Youth Empowerment Initiatives
Mission
Advocates for Youth believes that young people have the right to
participate meaningfully in developing programs and policies
that will affect their health and well-being. Advocates for
Youth works
in the United States and in developing countries to promote
youth-adult partnerships and to empower young people
as advocates and leaders in the field of sexual health.
Strategies
Building Youth's Abilities and Opportunities as Advocates and Leaders
Advocates for Youth educates, motivates, and
trains hundreds of youth each year to be effective sexual
health advocates and leaders. Advocates for Youth:
- Links young people from across the United States in a Youth Activist Network listserv that helps them to network and
share information and strategies around sexual health
activism.
- Spearheads
the Rights. Respect. Responsibility.®Campaign, an initiative
led by youth activists advocating for comprehensive
sex
education at the local, state, and national levels.
- Partners
with organizations, such as MTV and Rock the
Vote, to mobilize
youth to advocate for effective sex education programs
and policies.
- Trains
youth in the United States and in developing
countries to use the Internet as a means to become effective
online peer educators, advisors, and advocates.
- Works
with Advocates' International
Youth Leadership Council, a group of college-age
students, to advocate for increased U.S. support
for international family planning and for global
HIV/AIDS
prevention efforts.
- Works
with the entertainment industry through the Media
Project, encouraging depictions of responsible
sexual behavior in television programming.
Provoking
